Chief of Police

As Police Chief of the City of Bishopville, I am extremely proud to represent the dedicated
men and women of this Police Department. Bishopville, South Carolina, is located in the
heart of Lee County, and is the county seat with a population of approximately 3,800
residents. The officers of the Bishopville Police Department work hard to maintain the
serenity and charm of our quaint southern town. Our department has formed a strong
relationship with our citizens through community involvement and open communications.
Whether you live in Bishopville or if you are just visiting, the Police Department takes
every step to make sure that your time in Bishopville is an enjoyable and safe experience.

About Chief Ewing



Born in Hartsville, South Carolina, in 1971, Chief John E. Ewing Jr. graduated from Gaffney
Senior High School in 1989. Chief Ewing attended the University of South Carolina on a
football scholarship and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Upon graduation
from the University of South Carolina, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department hired Chief
Ewing. After graduating from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy where he received
the honor of being named a distinguished graduate, he served the Richland County Sheriff’s
Department for 13 years in numerous capacities. Chief Ewing held positions such as Court
Security, School Resource Officer, Line Deputy, Warrant Officer and Investigator for
Financial Crimes, Burglary and Major Crimes. Chief Ewing received the first grant position
for investigations of criminal domestic violence cases at Richland County. Chief Ewing
also served as Sergeant in the Victims Assistance Unit, Major Crimes Unit, Cold Case
Homicide Unit and Narcotics Unit.



Chief Ewing, among other honors, has been named Officer of the Year for the Dutch Fork
Optimist Club and Investigator of the Year for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.



Chief Ewing was sworn in as the Police Chief of Bishopville SC on June 3, 2007
